The Easter Island Statue Project is a project close to The Traveller's heart. Set up by renowned archaeologist and Traveller lecturer Dr Jo Anne Van Tilburg and her co director Cristian Arevalo Pakarati, it documents the work of the EISP, who have, under Jo Anne's leadership, been researching the statues of Easter Island since the early 1980's. Archaeological work on Easter Island is ongoing, including the mapping of the interior of Rano Raraku quarry. The EISP have also recently been awarded a grant from the Archaeological Institute of America to begin a project looking at preservation of the statues for the future. EISP is setting the agenda on 'responsible tourism' on Easter Island, and together with The Traveller are working to ensure that visitors are informed and educated about the island and the importance of the statues' conservation for future visitors. www.eisp.org.
