Centuries later, Philip II, unlike his Father Emperor Charles V, favoured Madrid's location over the trade nerve centre of Seville and moved the royal court here. Madrid has since grown to be one of Europe's largest and leading cities with a vibrant cultural life to underwrite the impressive sights of the city and its hinterland. Our 3-night tour includes a day's guided sightseeing including the fabulous Prado Museum collections, the Royal Palace and the historic Plaza Mayor, with the option of a daytrip to the nearby picturesque old capital of Toledo or to the impressive El Escorial palace.

stdClass Object ( [author_id] => 2 [author] => Irenie [authorname] => Irenie Ekkeshis [id] => 96 [title] => Mexico's Baroque Heritage [content] => The United States of Mexico has such a wonderful and long, richly chronicled history, peppered with magnificent monuments from throughout the ages, the cumulative heritage of many great civilsations. When the Spanish conquistadores arrived, they were stunned by the wealth and complex nature of the society they found, not least the heritage of the Olmec, Toltec, Maya and AztecEmpires. The inevitable cultural collision that ensued continued to help shape the distinct Mexican identity and brought a new dynamic with the rich Spanish Roman Catholic tradition, which wedded to the native indigenous influences served to produce magnificent Baroque monuments, many with a unique and prominent Mexican style that is celebrated as a central theme on the 7-day tour programme. Many monuments in Mexico enjoy UNESCO world heritage status and it comes as no surprise that the elaborate architecture of the Mexican Baroque churches makes an important contribution to the impressive listing that places Mexico in poll position in the American continent. The trip also allows an overview of other aspects of the incredible diversity of the geography, culture and customs of the country that are automatically showcased on any visit.

You are met by your local host who will transfer you to your centrally located hotel. Dinner and overnight. [day_2_title] => MEXICO CITY – THE HISTORICAL CENTRE [day_2_description] => Visit the capital’s downtown area, the Spanish city built on top of the ancient Aztec city of Tenochtitlan. This day’s tour will include the most significant baroque buildings from the colonial period, mostly belonging to the Churrigueresque variant, such as theCathedral’s Sacristy, and the churches of La Enseñanza, La Santísima and San Francisco. Other notable sights will include National Palace, the ex-cloister of Las Vizcaínas and Santo Domingo Square, flanked by the former Inquisition Palace. In the afternoon we move to the south of the city, with the colonial districts of San Angel, for a visit to the Church and Cloister of El Carmen, and Coyoacán, where we deviate for a while from our tour’s central theme for a most interesting visit to The Blue House, the birth-house –now a museum- of surrealist painter Frida Kahlo. Late afternoon return to hotel. [day_3_title] => TEPOTZOTLAN [day_3_description] => An interesting excursion to the small colonial town of Tepotzotlán, the site of one of the most impressive baroque monuments of the entire Continent, the church of SanFrancisco Javier. This building is remarkable not only because of its grandeur, but also because it is one of the few New Spanish XVIII century baroque churches which still preserves its original architecture, painting and sculpture. The splendid adjoining ex-Monastery houses the Museo Nacional del Virreinato – Viceroyalty Museum- with excellent collections –painting and sculpture- of colonial art. Return to Mexico City in the mid-afternoon. [day_4_title] => MEXICO CITY [day_4_description] => This morning we return to the city’s Historical Centre, for a visit to Colegio de San Ildefonso. This complex of buildings has a history dating back to the sixteenth century, its three inner courtyards separating the Colegio Chico (small school) from the Pasantes (interns) and the Gande (big) school. The muralist David Alfaro Siqueiros embellished the staircase, while there is a series of images by José Clemente Orozco, constituting one of the best collections of the Mexican muralist school. Our next stop is two remarkable –and completely different- colonial palaces, almost facing each other: the House of Tiles and the Palace of Iturbide. Finally, we visit MUNAL, the National Art Museum, occupying the former Communications Palace, a legacy of dictator Porfirio Diaz’ era. We wander through the immense rooms with polished wooden floors as we view the wealth of paintings showing Mexico's art development, primarily covering the period from 1810 to 1950. We´ll enjoy luncheon at a typical restaurant next to the Museum, before returning to hotel, with the remainder of the afternoon at leisure, to follow private interests. [day_5_title] => PUEBLA [day_5_description] => Early morning visit to the National Museum of Anthropology, housing the most important collections of the country’s numerous pre-Hispanic cultures. The Aztec Calendar and Earth-and-Death goddess Coatlicue are among the most impressive pieces on exhibition. We now leave the giant city in an easterly direction, climbing the Sierra Madre Mountains till an altitude of over 10,000 ft., in near sight of snow-capped giant volcanoes Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl. We reach historic, colonial Puebla by the end of the morning. After lunch we start a comprehensive visit of the city, with its colonial and baroque treasures, including the Catedral de Puebla, Iglesia de la Compañia de Jesús, Casa del Alfeñlique, Casa de los muñecos, the Dean’s House, the Church of Santa Rosa, Santo Domingo Monastery and the unique Rosary Chapel. [day_6_title] => PUEBLA AND ITS SURROUNDINGS [day_6_description] => After completing the visit of Puebla, we start a circuit of its interesting surroundings, which include the historically important town of Chollula, where the country’s largest pyramid –only partly uncovered, and topped by the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Remedies- is located; then proceed to two nearby small towns: Acatepec, with the unique church of San Francisco, its façade completely covered by bricks and tiles, in the purest colonial poblano style; and Tonantzintla, with the even more striking Santa María Church, the most complete example of the colourful native so-called Indian Baroque. Please note this is just a guide itinerary and amendments can be made to any part of it. Japan remains an enigmatic country whose heart and soul lies in the indigenous religion, Shinto, nurse to the arts and crafts since before the written word. Buddhism was introduced in the 6th century, becoming the state religion 200 years later and influencing temple, art, gardens, traditions and architecture under the encouragement of the Samurai clans who ruled for some 700 years until the mid-19th century. The Edo period (1604-1867) saw a flourishing of Japan's famed woodblock - when the country was virtually closed to foreigners. These are enacted today just as they were 300 years ago. Learn how Japanese culture has developed by a slow process of accumulation and adaptation, resulting in a deep and meaningful appreciation of the past. The courteous and welcoming Japanese people help to ensure an enjoyable and memorable visit. stdClass Object ( [author_id] => 1 [author] => core [authorname] => Admin User [id] => 31 [title] => Roman Algeria [content] => "Algeria is essentially the heart of the Roman province of Mauretania. What we discover here equates quite simply to some of the finest Roman remains that are to be seen anywhere and the itinerary for our tour abounds in wonderful monumental splendours. Modern Algeria contains some of the most magnificent ruins of the Roman Empire. After the fall of Carthage the area became a vassal state under the authority of Roman-supporter King Juba II whose wife was the daughter of Mark Anthony and Cleopatra. He was installed on the throne of his Kingdom in 29 BC and from this time Rome received wheat and olive oil from this naturally productive area. The intrigue and Imperial plans of Caligula caused the murder of Juba's son, King Ptolemy, some 70 years later. There followed five centuries of Roman domination in which their culture flourished and left us a legacy of timeless architecture. I hope you can join me in enjoying what is a veritable feast for lovers of things Roman, a collection of sites that attests to the rich cultural life that the province came to enjoy and that is still perceptible in the modern country."
