INTRODUCTION

"The Book of the Dead consists of texts and scenes on papyrus designed to guide and accompany the deceased in the afterlife and so represents a very important component of ancient Egyptian culture. The British Museum has one of the finest collections of this important information source about pharaonic beliefs and is the ideal place for us to set the scene as we head out for ‘Egypt to its End', as the ancients referred to the whole of Egypt. On this tour from the Mediterranean to the First Cataract, highlighting sites much-loved and others less-visited but all equally intriguing such as Alexandria and the evocative site of Amarna, we will pay special attention to sites with particular relevance to The Book of the Dead."

This tour includes an optional visit with Carol Andrews to the British Museum to see the fine collection of the Books of the Dead, ahead of departure.
