INTRODUCTION

Western China’s Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Province offers a heady cocktail of breathtaking scenery and an incredibly rich archaeological, textile and textual legacy, inherited from the region’s early Buddhist, Christian and Manichaean settlers. This fascinating journey visits the famous sites of Dunhuang and Turfan, as well as lesser known areas, such as Beiting which have only recently opened to the public.
