TOUR ITINERARY
- London/Ashgabat- Overnight flight via Istanbul.
- Ashgabat- Framed by mountain and desert landscape, Ashgabat was founded by the Russians in the late 19th century. Guided tour of Ashgabat and its modern monuments, including the fine Carpet Museum. We also look at the traditional crafts of hat-making and boot-making.
- Archaeology & Horsemanship- Visit Geok Tepe fortress, Murche ruins and end the day at Hemra’s Arkadash farm, the best collection of Akhal Teke horses in the country.
- East along the Silk Road- Visit Annay Mosque, then drive across the foothills of the Eastern Kopetdag Mountains, rich in ancient monuments. See the Meane Baba mausoleum of an 11th-century Sufi teacher. Continue to Sarags.
- Mary- View Abu Fazl Mausoleum and Yarty Gumbaz, before continuing east to Mary, ancient Merv.
- Gonur Depe- Excursion to Gonur Depe, the main site of Zoroastrian Margush, representing the centre of a great 4,000 year old fire-worshipping civilisation.
- Merv- Turkmenistan held great political influence in the 12th century when the Seljuks ruled from Merv until its destruction by the Mongols. Explore this oldest and most completely preserved of oasis cities along the Silk Route, its remains spanning 4,000 years. Merv, known in classical times as Margiana, was part of the Achaemenian Empire in 6th century BC. See the Mausoleum of Sultan Sanjar and the Gyz-Gala fortress, highlights in this vast 2,000 hectare city site. We will also have an opportunity to explore the Necropolis, with its unique burial traditions, and Mary’s History Museum.
- Ashgabat- Return to Ashgabat via Nedir Shakh’s 18th-century Persian fortress.
- Ashgabat, Nissa- Explore Ashgabat’s Talkuchka Sunday bazaar, where colourful rugs, jewellery and costumes can be found, and then visit the Museum of History and Ethnography. Evening visit to Nissa, whose citadel, palaces, temples and tombs date to the 3rd century BC when it was the capital of a Parthian Empire. Return to Ashgabat.
- Kunya Urgench- A day trip by air north to Dashoguz to visit Kunya Urgench for the Mausoleum of Turabeg Khanum and the Shrine of Fakhr al-Din Razi. Return to Ashgabat.
- Ashgaba- Free day to explore the city further.
- Ashgabat/ London- Return flight to London via Istanbul.
