Buddhism was introduced to Ladakh by Emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BC and religion has played a pivotal role in local life, attested by the ubiquitous monasteries and colourful festivals for which Ladakh is famous. Tucked away in the Karakorum, this arid region of stark beauty, gompas, journeying traders and entrenched enigmatic traditions exudes a captivating appeal.
