TOUR ITINERARY

  • Lima - Fly to Lima on an overnight flight.

  • Lima - City tour of colonial Lima to include a visit to the National Museum of Archaeology. Optional dinner at La Huaca Pucllana Restaurant including a visit of the ruins. Overnight in Lima.

  • Lima - Morning visit to the private Larco Herrera Museum with head curator Ulla Holmquist, the largest private collection of Pre-Colombian art in the world. Option this evening for dinner at the Huaca Pucllana restaurant with a new tour of the ruins.

  • Caral - Visit the site of Caral dating back to 2600 BC and embark on a city tour with archaeologist Ruth Shady. Picnic lunch included today. Overnight in Lima.

  • Lima, Trujillo - Morning city tour of colonial Trujillo followed by exploring the Moche Valley including the huge pyramids of Huaca del Sol and Huaca de la Luna with their colourful moulded decorations. We stop in Huanchaco to view the famous reed boats and to have lunch before seeing the impressive ancient city of Chan Chan, capital of the Chimu Empire and possibly the largest adobe city in the world. Dinner and overnight in Trujillo.

  • Trujillo, Cajamarca - Depart Trujillo heading to Cajamarca, a journey of around 6 hours. En route visit Huaca Dragon and El Brujo Complex including the Cao Museum home to Senora Cao. Dinner and overnight in Cajamarca.

  • Cajamarca - Morning tour of Cajamarca where the Inca Emperor Atahualpa was held hostage by Francisco Pizarro, the Spanish Conquistador, unleashing the destruction of Inca civilisation. Visit Ventanillas de Otusco, a pre-Inca cemetery. Dinner and overnight in Cajamarca.

  • Cajamarca, Leymebamba - A stunning drive to Leymebamba, a journey of around 7 hours with a chance to sample local ingredients and to see hummingbirds at Kenticafe. Dinner and overnight in Leymebamba.

  • Leymebamba, Revash - Visit the important Leymebamba museum which displays more than 200 mummies and transfer to Revash a spectacular funery site located on a mountain cliff. Meet Archaeologist Sonia Guillen. Dinner at Celis Restaurant and overnight Leymebamba.

  • Kuelap - Depart Leymebamba to Kuelap, the spectacular Chacahpoyan fortified ceremonial city in the cloud forest, built from AD 900-1100 and thought to be North Peru’s Machu Picchu. Visit the military post Macro with its towers and continue to Chachapoyas. Dinner and overnight Chachapoyas.

  • Karajia, Huancas - Explore Karajia to see the ancient cliff burials with their earthenware and painted coffins. This afternoon visit the Sonche Canyon and the town of Huancas. Dinner and overnight Chachapoyas.

  • Gocta, Jaen - Visit Gocta falls, the third tallest free-leaping waterfall in the world. Continue onto Jaen overland. Dinner and overnight at Jaen.

  • Jaen, Chiclayo - Drive to Chiclayo, visiting the archaeological site of Tucume, valley of the pyramids which holds 26 pyramids and platforms over an area of 540 acres. Meet archaeologist Alfred Narvaez. Find the burrowing owls present on the site. Overnight Chiclayo.

  • Chiclayo - Visit the most important pyramids of the Sican culture (750- 1375 AC) in the National Sanctuary Bosque de Pomac. This afternoon visit the National Museum of Sican and meet archaeologist Carlos Elera. Overnight Chiclayo.

  • Chiclayo - Venture to the Ventarron temple this morning which holds the oldest wall painting in the Americas. Discovered by archaeologist Dr Walter Alva, have the rare opportunity to meet with this fascinating archaeologist made famous by his discovery of the Lord of Sipan. This afternoon visit the Royal Tombs Museum of Sipan which contains by far the greatest intact discovery of gold artefacts in the Americas and houses the Lord of Sipan. Overnight Chiclayo.

  • Chiclayo, Lima - Fly to Lima where you shall have time to explore Miraflores independently before your overnight flight home.

  • UK- Arrive in the UK.
