TOUR ITINERARY

  • London/Algiers - Fly to Algiers.

  • Tipasa, Cherchell- Drive to Tipasa, set on the shores of the Mediterranean, to view the Roman ruins via the ‘Mauretanian Tomb’. Afternoon visit Cherchell, the former Roman port of Caesarea, with its archaeological museum.

  • Algiers, Setif - City tour of Algiers including the Museum of Antiquities, the Cathedral of Notre Dame d’Afrique which mixes Roman and Byzantine styles and the famous early 16th-century Kasbah built as an Ottoman Fort and palace of the local ruler. After lunch travel on to Setif.

  • Djemila, Constantine- Visit Setif Archaeological Museum and then drive to Djemila, considered one of the most outstanding sites in Algeria, an excellent example of Roman town planning adapted to a mountain location. Afterwards, continue on to Constantine, ‘the city of bridges’.

  • Tiddis, Constantine- Excursion to the Roman site of Tiddis, then return to Constantine for an afternoon tour of ‘old’ Constantine, including the bridge suspended over the spectacular gorge of Sidi Mcid, the memorial arch, the Kantara Bridge, the aqueduct ruins, the exterior of the Great Mosque and the excellent museum.

  • Annaba- On to the Mediterranean coast at Annaba, ancient Hippo, to visit the ruins of Hippo Regius, including those of the Christian basilica in this town where locally born St Augustine became bishop. We also view the modern basilica.

  • Guelma, Tebessa- Visit Guelma, founded by Numidians, conquered by Romans and sacked by the Vandals, and view its restored outstanding Roman Theatre and Byzantine fortress. Then on to Madaure, with its fine Roman remains, and Tebessa to view the Roman monuments interspersed with the town.

  • Khenchella, Timgad, Batna- Visit the Roman baths at Khenchella, then spend the bulk of the day visiting Timgad with its splendidly preserved Roman town founded in 100 AD by Emperor Trajan. Continue to Batna.

  • Lambaesis- Drive to visit ‘Le Medracen’ tomb. Afterwards visit the nearby major Roman site of Lambaesis to explore the legionary fortress and gladiator theatre.

  • Batna/ London- Return flight to London via Algiers.
