TOUR ITINERARY

  • London / Khartoum - Depart London Heathrow for Khartoum.

  • Khartoum, Karima- Journey north through the desert to Karima on the Nile, at the foot of Jebel Barkal.

  • El Kurru, Nuri- View the pyramids and temples of Jebel Barkal. Visit the Kushite royal cemetery at El Kurru with 9th-century BC tombs, and the pyramids and royal cemeteries at Nuri, burial place of the Napaptan king Taharqa.

  • Karima, Kerma, Tombos- Head west through the Nubian Desert for Selim village and the majestic ‘deffufa’ mudbrick structure at Kerma, seat of the first independent kingdom of Kush. On to Tombos for the granite quarries and Sebu rock engravings by the Nile.

  • Sesibi, Soleb, Seddeinga- Cross the Nile for the temple of Sesibi, the New Kingdom ruins and original town clearly visible, and the Akhenaten Temple. Travel on to Soleb for the 14th-century BC Temple of Amenhotep III, the best preserved of Sudan’s Egyptian temples.

  • Sai Island- Visit Sai Island to see the Ottoman fort, medieval church, Kushite cemetery, Pharaonic town and cemeteries.

  • Old Dongola, Karima- South to the archaeological ruins at Old Dongola, a Christian Coptic temple with marble columns. Evening return to Karima.

  • Bayuda Desert, Atbara, Meroe- Cross the Nile and enter the Bayuda Desert, a vast area of sharp black basalt mountains. Reach Atbara to visit the site of the 1889 Good Friday battle between Kitchener’s forces and the Mahdi. Continue to the royal necropolis of Meroe, the ancient Kushite capital.

  • Meroe- Explore the impressive site of Meroe, the southern capital of the Napata/ Meroitic Kingdom that spanned the period circa 800 BC - 350 AD.

  • Naqa, Musawwarat, Khartoum- To Naqa for the well preserved Lion Temple and to the Meroitic site at Musawwarat es Sufra for the large temple complex and the ‘Great Enclosure’. Drive back to Khartoum.

  • Khartoum- Visit the fine collections of the National Museum. On to historic Omdurman for the Khalifa House, the tomb of the Mahdi and Omdurman Souq. Optional cruise to the confluence of the Blue and White Nile.

  • Khartoum/ London- Return flight to London.
